A new study has found that AI can match or even surpass the performance of junior lawyers and legal outsourcers in spotting legal issues in contracts.
The speed, cost-effectiveness, and high accuracy of AI make it a superior choice for many routine tasks that law firms perform, the researchers conclude.
The Study: Comparing AI to Human Lawyers
In the study titled “Better Call GPT: Comparing Large Language Models Against Lawyers,” researchers set out to rigorously compare the performance of AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), against human legal professionals in reviewing contracts.
The human participants comprised junior lawyers, representing early-career professionals with foundational legal training, and legal process outsourcers (LPOs), who are experts in providing legal support services, including document review.
This comparison aimed to assess whether AI could match or surpass the meticulousness, efficiency, and economic viability of human-led contract analysis, providing a clear benchmark for AI’s potential role in legal practice.
