The Life of Robert Wadlow
Early Years and Growth
Robert Wadlow was born on February 22, 1918, in Alton, Illinois.
He held the title of the tallest man in recorded history, reaching a height of 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m).
Wadlow’s incredible growth was due to an overactive pituitary gland, which produced an excess of growth hormone.
His parents were of average height, and there were no indications that Robert would become the “Gentle Giant” during his early years.
However, Wadlow’s rapid growth became apparent in his toddler years.
By the age of five, he already stood at a height of 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in), and by the age of six, he reached 5 ft 7 in.
Living with Height
Growing up, Robert faced numerous challenges due to his extraordinary height.
Yet, the “Alton Giant” always made the best out of his situation.
Wadlow continued to enjoy daily activities and completed his studies in the United States.
To honor Wadlow’s memory, a life-size statue was erected in his hometown of Alton, Illinois, showcasing the immense scale of his height.
His story became an integral part of the town’s medical history, and Robert Wadlow continues to be a symbol of human growth potential.
Health Challenges and Passing
Unfortunately, Robert’s incredible height brought about numerous health issues.
His large size and weight, reaching 439 lb (199 kg), put tremendous strain on his body.
Wadlow’s condition, known as gigantism, resulted in his eventual passing.
On July 15, 1940, at the young age of 22, Robert Wadlow passed away due to an infection caused by a septic blister.
He was last measured on 27 June 1940, just a few weeks before his passing.
Wadlow was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Alton, Illinois, where his father erected a monument celebrating his son’s incredible life.

The current Guinness World Record for the tallest living man is held by Sultan Kösen from Turkey, who stands at 8 ft 2.8 inches (251 cm).
