Video ads made by an AI system from nothing more than a song and its album cover got 26% more clicks on TikTok than ads designed by people, and cost 98% less to produce. On Meta, the AI ads did about as well as the human-made ones.
The study, “Music Marketing with Generative AI,” was written by Benedikt Roder and Jochen Hartmann of the Technical University of Munich. It was published online in Marketing Science on October 14, 2026.
700 million possible ads
Making video ads is expensive, and that puts them out of reach for many smaller artists. The researchers built a system they call MAGE, short for Marketing Asset Generation Engine. Given a track’s audio and its album cover, it can produce more than 700 million variations of a video ad that match the artist’s visual style.
Working with one of the world’s largest music labels, they tested it in four preregistered field studies. These covered 75 ad campaigns for 33 tracks on TikTok and Meta, with more than 11 million impressions in total.
On TikTok, the AI ads had click-through rates 26% higher on average and 10% more engagement than the ads made by people.
People could not pick the winners
Neither marketing professionals nor ordinary viewers could reliably tell which ads would do best. Ads picked at random from the system’s output performed as well as ads chosen by people.
A second AI model, trained on how earlier ads had performed, did better. It could predict before launch which of the generated ads would work best for particular groups of viewers.
The authors argue that this kind of tool could give smaller artists effective, on-brand video ads that they could not otherwise afford.
The abstract does not name the label, the artists or the genres involved, and it does not give the actual click-through rates behind the percentages.
